W. E. and Mable McDonald purchased Bradford Funeral Home, 102 W. End, Centerville, TN, on Nov. 7, 1945. Bradford Funeral Home's name was then changed to McDonald Funeral Home by the new owners. The McDonalds moved from Nashville into the newly completed apartment in the funeral home and continued to live there for twenty-nine years before building a home on their farm. Mable's sister, Mildred, and her husband, Lloyd Bridges, moved to Centerville, and were involved in helping us run the business until 1966.
As customs changed, and people started using the funeral home more for their visitations and funerals, it became necessary to remodel in order to have more available space. Partitions were removed , three rooms, a chapel and an office were added.
On October 2, 1951, the McDonalds purchased a large residential house in Lewis County. After extensive remodeling and adding a large addition to this house, McDonald Funeral Home, Hohenwald, was opened. Prior to that time, the McDonald's had operated a funeral business from only a small office in Hohenwald. This funeral home was managed by T. E. and Lura Mae Skelton. Lura Mae is a sister to W. E. McDonald.
McDonald Funeral Homes were incorporated in 1975.
William Boling "Bill" McDonald, the oldest of three sons of W. E. and Mable, joined the business in 1976. Bill and his parents operated the business together until the early 1990s. W. E. passed away in 1995. McDonald Funeral Homes, Inc., is now owned by Bill McDonald. Mable continues to remain active in the business with the preparation of the remains.
